Zoha it is very sad that your grandfather Mr Yusuf Azad is no longer with us now but he has left us with such wonderful memories. He really was a great qawal. Do you know anything about Ms. Rasida Khatoon? Is she still alive? She is very outstanding too. I just love both of them.

Unfortunately Wikipedia has classified Qawwals as Pakistani and Indian.
Presenting Pakistani Qawwal did not mention any Qawwal of India.
e.g. Nusrat Fateh ali khan was born in 1936 I was in 1938. I attended
Abdul Rehman (Kanchwala), Yusuf Azad, Ismail Azad, Jani Babu, Shaqila
Bano Bhopali, Aslam Azad, Shanker Shambhu etc etc.
Very first I saw Yusuf Azad in 1944-1945 attending his qawwali. as I said before. Though Nusrat no doubt popularize qawwali to westerners.

I first saw Yusuf Azad in 1944, I was 9 years Old in marriage of daughter of my
father’s friend. During that period AbdulRehman (kanchwala) was alos very popular
qawwal. Uptil end of Public qawwali trend every Qawali of Yusuf Azad, Ismail Azad,
Jani babu, Shaqila banu Bhopali,Shanker Shambhu,Aslam Azad, etc attended.
during early eighty’s trend became of show presentations.
